Teaching

Overview:

Teaching is a core passion of mine, and has interested me from a relatively young age. At 15 years old I started coaching freestyle skiing part-time for my local team. All throughout high school I worked as a coach, both in skiing and gymnastics. By the time I graduated, I was teaching guitar lessons too. 10 years later I’ve found myself teaching as a missionary in Peru, as a wilderness guide in a primitive living based therapy programs, and adding several instruments to my teaching repertoire. Perhaps most importantly, I’ve had many influential teachers and mentors both inside and outside the world of music from whom I’ve tried to soak up as much as possible. In 2019 I graduated with a degree in jazz composition from the University of Utah.

Philosophy:

The best teachers I’ve had have been not only excellent musicians, but excellent people and friends. I believe in relationship based teaching, and try to see my students as good friends. As far as the technical stuff goes, I believe in building a robust foundation that will encourage musical versatility in the future; but this does not mean I teach a “one size fits all” curriculum or that lessons are boring. I am consistently amazed at the variety of learning styles present in my students and work hard to adapt to each individual. At the end of the day, if I have cultivated a “spark” in my students, I have done a good job.

What do I Teach?

Guitar

Piano

Voice (I usually teach this in conjunction with another instrument)

Ukulele

Theory

Composition/Songwriting

Nitty-Gritty:

I recommend doing lessons on a weekly basis unless you are a more seasoned musician. I’ve found over the years that consistency of lessons = consistency of practice. I currently offer lessons as house calls (meaning I come to you) . Pricing is listed below. I currently reside and teach in Teton Valley, Idaho. For beginners a half hour is usually good, but I find that most of my students have a pretty good intuition for lesson length that is right for them. As far as age goes, 6 years old is about the youngest I will teach. Submit a form below or just send an email to nicquiltermusic@gmail.com to get in touch and we can set something up!
